Why this DNC Refuses to Release their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: A Deep Dive.

This decision from the Democratic National Committee to block the publication of its internal post-election analysis concerning the last presidential race appears shocking yet entirely predictable. Averse to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus operates closer to a communications shop than a political organization devoted to cultivating local power for winning elections.

A Climate of Conformity

Hesitant to depart from the prevailing attitude of conformity, the DNC has continued under that legacy all through this past year. Publishing such a report could have demonstrated that party leaders actually want to encourage open debate regarding the errors that paved the way for the former president to become president again. However, the DNC is proceeding as if there's nothing to glean following the tragic debacle of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? If not, it becomes a sideline issue from our fundamental goal," an explanation which was presented to justify concealing the report.

Key Issues a Report Would Have Examined

A genuine analysis of substance would tackle head-on key points of failure. This encompasses:

  • Voter Disengagement: Failing to retain of millions of voters who supported the Democratic ticket during the previous election was decisive in the narrowly decided recent race.
  • The Insistence to Seek Re-election: The determined decision of a party leader to stay in the race, and a very late exit, is viewed as robbing the party's base the chance for a competitive nomination process.
  • Failing the Working-Class Base: During a time of rising costs, the campaign allegedly ceding to powerful financial backers without successfully attempting to address the impact of corporate greed.
  • The Foreign Policy Effect: An unwillingness to reconsider a stance on a ongoing war allegedly caused losing significant blocs, notably among youth voters, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • A Decline in Youth Allegiance: Research indicates a major decline in support for the party from voters aged 18-29.

A Record of Evasion

Choosing secrecy aligns with a pattern of sidestepping uncomfortable facts. This mirrors a dynamic where the vast majority of elected Democrat in Washington went along with an incumbent's determination to seeking another term until a poor public debate performance led to an exit.

At the same time, large majorities of the electorate were repeatedly informing surveyors that they opposed the incumbent to be the nominee.

Financial Issues

An honest autopsy could probe matters about where money went, including the amounts flowed to party strategists and advertising contractors over the course of an electoral effort that managed to spend an enormous sum in a short period.

The Underlying Problem

Fundamentally, the secrecy regarding the analysis is symptomatic of a submission toward the established hierarchy that oversaw an unsuccessful national race. The signal to the party's base – which includes countless dedicated activists – appears to be that they do not have a right to see the lessons party chiefs say they discovered from hundreds of interviews compiled from feedback from all states.

A party unwilling to critically review its mistakes is unlikely to escape the cycle which was so helpful to the winning candidate.
