New research indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using such drugs should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
