A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
